Os poucos trabalhos existentes sobre multilinguismo na Nigéria foram, até agora, estudados sob a perspetiva sociológica. Estudos que investigam os aspetos sociopsicológicos do fenómeno são quase inexistentes. Este livro investiga a dinâmica do multilinguismo e os padrões de escolha linguística em Warri a partir de uma perspetiva sociopsicológica, para desvendar os fatores que orientam a escolha feita pelos falantes entre os códigos linguísticos disponíveis no contexto de Warri, nomeadamente, Isekiri, Izon, Urhobo, Pidgin Nigeriano (NP) e Inglês. Utilizando a teoria da acomodação proposta por Howard Giles, afirma que a acomodação é um facto importante na escolha de qualquer língua num contexto multilingue. Depois de explicar por que o NP se tornou a língua mais dominante em termos pragmáticos na região de Warri, o livro afirma que, uma vez que a necessidade de se adaptar ao NP é mais forte do que o desejo de manter a(s) língua(s) étnica(s) em Warri, os fatores sociolinguísticos devem orientar a formulação de políticas de planeamento linguístico, ao mesmo tempo que devem ser tomadas medidas para preservar as línguas indígenas da região, a fim de evitar o seu desaparecimento iminente, uma vez que já se encontram atrofiadas.
