As mulheres que vivem com VIH/SIDA, em particular, têm sido posicionadas como uma fonte latente de infecção e têm sido alvo de culpa e reprovação, levando a uma vida altamente estigmatizada e discriminada. Apesar da situação, as mulheres e as suas preocupações específicas têm sido amplamente ignoradas na literatura de investigação sobre HIV/AIDS. Esta revisão examina e analisa os sentimentos, experiências e perceções das mulheres que vivem com HIV/AIDS (WLHA) e também avalia o papel dos grupos de apoio como estratégia de enfrentamento com base em 7 investigações primárias realizadas em diferentes partes do mundo. Os grupos de apoio devem ser oferecidos como parte fundamental dos serviços de VIH/SIDA e devem ser defendidos como uma intervenção eficaz e útil. São necessárias mais pesquisas para examinar o efeito dos grupos de apoio para mulheres que vivem com VIH/SIDA. Um ensaio clínico randomizado baseado na comunidade, com um grupo de apoio como intervenção e um grupo de controlo, poderia fornecer mais evidências do valor dos grupos de apoio.
