Insbesondere Frauen, die mit HIV/AIDS leben, werden als latente Infektionsquelle angesehen und mit Schuld und Vorwürfen konfrontiert, was zu einem Leben voller Stigmatisierung und Diskriminierung führt. Trotz dieser Situation wurden Frauen und ihre besonderen Anliegen in der HIV/AIDS-Forschungsliteratur weitgehend ignoriert. Diese Übersicht untersucht und analysiert die Gefühle, Erfahrungen und Wahrnehmungen von Frauen, die mit HIV/AIDS leben (WLHA), und bewertet die Rolle von Selbsthilfegruppen als Bewältigungsstrategie auf der Grundlage von sieben Primärstudien, die in oder über verschiedene Teile der Welt durchgeführt wurden. Selbsthilfegruppen sollten als grundlegender Bestandteil der HIV/AIDS-Versorgung angeboten und als wirksame und nützliche Intervention gefördert werden. Es sind weitere Untersuchungen erforderlich, um die Wirkung von Selbsthilfegruppen für Frauen mit HIV/AIDS zu untersuchen. Eine gemeindebasierte randomisierte kontrollierte Studie mit einer Selbsthilfegruppe als Intervention und einer Kontrollgruppe könnte weitere Belege für den Wert von Selbsthilfegruppen liefern.
