O principal objetivo deste trabalho é examinar os sistemas da indústria comercial global que exasperam o sofrimento no mundo em desenvolvimento, especificamente para as mulheres empobrecidas. É adoptada uma abordagem crítica em relação aos vários movimentos que surgiram para contrariar as desigualdades da indústria. É também chamada a atenção para a capacidade limitada dos espaços jurídicos tradicionais para atualizar os direitos das massas oprimidas. Por conseguinte, enquanto defensores contemporâneos, temos de considerar as possibilidades de ação que podem não se enquadrar nas noções tradicionais de desenvolvimento, a fim de concretizar os direitos sociais e económicos dos explorados. Como a globalização continua a romper formações arcaicas de poder, lei e capital - nunca houve um momento mais adequado para imaginar novos modelos de desenvolvimento que se concentrem inteiramente na emancipação das massas oprimidas da ordem sistemática do sofrimento.
