Este estudo investiga a mudança cultural entre o grupo étnico Sidama da zona urbana de Hawassa, no sul da Etiópia. As culturas estão em constante mudança. Mudam devido a conflitos entre diferentes elementos, devido ao contacto com estranhos e também devido ao crescimento da população, doenças, alterações climáticas e catástrofes naturais (Stroma Cole, 2008). Os resultados do estudo indicam que a cultura Sidama em Hawassa tem vindo a mudar. No início de 1970, o sistema político indígena de Sidama foi significativamente alterado. Em meados da década de 1980, o protestantismo deu ao povo um novo conjunto de crenças que desafiava a anterior religião Sidama. Após a queda do Derg, a língua passou a ocupar um lugar central na política étnica etíope. Por conseguinte, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a mudança e a continuidade da cultura Sidama, tomando as subcidades de Addis Ketema e Tabor como estudos de caso na cidade de Hawassa, SNNPRS, Etiópia. Nenhuma cultura é estática. No entanto, a maioria das culturas é basicamente conservadora, na medida em que tende a resistir à mudança. Por outro lado, outras culturas são facilmente assimiladas à cultura dominante. Atualmente, a mudança cultural entre os Sidama de Hawassa é muito rápida e visível.
