Cette étude porte sur les changements culturels au sein du groupe ethnique Sidama de la ville de Hawassa, dans le sud de l’Éthiopie. Les cultures sont en constante évolution. Elles changent en raison de conflits entre différents éléments, de contacts avec des étrangers et également en raison de la croissance démographique, de maladies, de changements climatiques et de catastrophes naturelles (Stroma Cole, 2008). Les résultats de l’étude indiquent que la culture Sidama à Hawassa a évolué. Au début des années 1970, le système politique indigène des Sidama a été profondément modifié. Au milieu des années 1980, le protestantisme a apporté à la population un nouvel ensemble de croyances qui remettaient en question l’ancienne religion des Sidama. Après la chute du Derg, la langue a pris une place centrale dans la politique ethnique éthiopienne. L’objectif de cette étude était donc d’évaluer le changement et la continuité de la culture Sidama en prenant les sous-cités d’Addis Ketema et de Tabor comme études de cas dans la ville de Hawassa, SNNPRS, Éthiopie. Aucune culture n’est statique. Cependant, la plupart des cultures sont fondamentalement conservatrices en ce sens qu’elles ont tendance à résister au changement. D’autre part, d’autres cultures sont facilement assimilées à la culture dominante. Actuellement, le changement culturel chez les Sidama de Hawassa est très rapide et visible.
