Die freie Neigung war durchaus das Gesetz, nach dem er lebte und handelte, und nach dem er seiner Natur gemäß einzig zu leben vermochte. So finden wir auch jetzt, obwohl er seine Neigung überwunden und seinen Willen dem des Vaters gebeugt, bei ihm durchaus nicht jenen Frieden, jene Harmonie, die ein solcher Kampf zu erzeugen pflegt. Er hat seinen Wunsch, bei der Geliebten zu weilen und mit ihr gemeinsam die Krone des Lebens zu erringen, dem Drängen des Vaters geopfert. Er hat zu dem Ziele, das auch er wie der Vater erstrebt, zu einer Thätigkeit, in der er seine hohen Gaben in vollem Maße entwickeln und eine sichere Lebensstellung erringen kann, zu gelangen, einen andern weg eingeschlagen, als den er nach seiner innersten Ueberzeugung für den rechten hält.'
