In den USA ist die kognitive Verhaltenstherapie wie ERP zu einer Standardbehandlung für Patienten mit Zwangsstörungen geworden. In einigen Fällen verschlimmert der Versuch, kognitive Inhalte zu korrigieren, jedoch die Obsessionen. Es werden zwei Fälle von Zwangsstörungen dargestellt, bei denen nach dem Versuch einer kognitiven Verhaltenstherapie die stationäre Morita-Therapie angewendet wurde und einen positiven Fortschritt zeigte. Die Morita-Therapie wurde 1919 von Shoma Morita in Japan gegründet und basiert auf östlicher Psychologie. In diesem Buch werden die stationäre Morita-Therapie und die ambulante Morita-Therapie vorgestellt. Seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre zeichnet sich in den USA ein neuer Trend in der kognitiven Verhaltenstherapie ab, der als bezeichnet wird. Die 1999 entwickelte Akzeptanz- und Commitment-Therapie (ACT) ist repräsentativ für diesen Trend. Hofman, S.G. veröffentlichte 2008 einen Artikel mit dem Titel Neue Welle oder Morita-Therapie? und argumentierte, dass ACT keine neue Welle sei, sondern konzeptionell der Morita-Therapie sehr ähnlich sei. Da sich diese Studie auf Fälle konzentriert, um ACT und ambulante Morita-Therapie zu vergleichen.
