A redução da energia é o principal problema dos protocolos de encaminhamento. Nesta tese, alargámos dois protocolos de encaminhamento baseados em clusters para melhorar o tempo de vida do sistema de redes de sensores sem fios. Os dois protocolos aqui estudados são: Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) e Link Aware Clustering Mechanism. O LEACH não tem em conta a energia restante dos nós quando seleciona o chefe de agrupamento (CH). Como a seleção do CH é probabilística, um nó com energia muito baixa tem boas hipóteses de se tornar CH. Quando este nó deixa de funcionar, todo o cluster fica inoperacional. É por isso que consideramos a energia restante do nó quando seleccionamos o CH. Estabelecemos um limiar pré-determinado quando seleccionamos o CH, limiar esse que tem em conta a energia restante do nó. A partir dos nossos resultados de simulação, é evidente que o tempo de vida do Extended-LEACH é melhor do que o do LEACH. Os seus nós estão vivos 100 vezes por ronda em vez do protocolo LEACH. Nesta tese, tentamos melhorar o método LCM (link-aware clustering method). No nosso trabalho, esforçamo-nos por implementar nós diferentes em locais diferentes. As nossas simulações demonstram que os nós que estão longe da estação de base (BS).
