Podwodne systemy korytowo-wałowe mają duże znaczenie, ponieważ uważa się je za ostateczne miejsce gromadzenia większości piasku dostarczanego przez powiązane z nimi rzeki i delty. Prądy mętne, które powodują powstawanie tych form geomorfologicznych, są w stanie przetransportować w jednym przepływie tyle osadu, ile największa rzeka świata jest w stanie wytworzyć w ciągu całego roku! Cechy tych prądów mętnych o charakterze osadowym prawdopodobnie determinują budowę podwodnych kanałów i związanych z nimi stożków wydmowych. W niniejszej książce, opartej na modelowaniu matematycznym, wykazano wpływ między innymi koncentracji przepływu, chropowatości dna morskiego oraz wymiarów kanionów na powstawanie kanałów podmorskich, a także interakcje prądów mętnych. Symulacje przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem modelu osadowego Midland’s Valley 4D. Wyniki niniejszego badania mogą dostarczyć cennych informacji przy prognozowaniu i określaniu obecności piasków nadających się na złoża, gdy zostaną wykorzystane w połączeniu z danymi sejsmicznymi i danymi z odwiertów.
