Dalla scoperta di un nuovo paradigma di sviluppo che collega lo sviluppo al miglioramento della qualità della vita, è stato stabilito che uno strumento potente per migliorare lo sviluppo umano è la spesa pubblica. In linea con questo, tutti i livelli di governo, sia nei paesi sviluppati che in quelli in via di sviluppo, hanno effettuato spese in diversi settori/servizi per accentuare lo sviluppo umano, ma l’impatto della spesa in questi settori sullo sviluppo umano a livello statale rimane inesplorato. Al fine di colmare questa lacuna di conoscenza, è stato condotto questo studio per esplorare il modello di spesa e il suo impatto distributivo sullo sviluppo umano negli Stati della Nigeria. Per garantire la solidità dell’analisi, sono stati generati e utilizzati come predittori dello sviluppo umano i dati relativi alla spesa totale, ricorrente e in conto capitale per l’istruzione, la sanità, l’agricoltura, lo sviluppo rurale, l’energia, l’edilizia abitativa, la sostenibilità ambientale e le risorse idriche in 20 Stati dal 1996 al 2008.
