Questo lavoro è molto importante per spiegare le prestazioni di tre modelli di irrigazione e gestione dell’acqua (AquaCrop, CropSyst e WOFOST). Il libro confronta AquaCrop, un modello di simulazione delle colture sviluppato dalla FAO, con quello di due modelli ben consolidati, CropSyst e WOFOST, nella simulazione della crescita di molte colture in diversi regimi idrici nel mondo. I modelli differiscono per il livello di complessità della descrizione dello sviluppo delle colture, per i principali moduli di crescita che guidano la simulazione della crescita della biomassa e per il numero di parametri di input. AquaCrop si basa esclusivamente sul modulo di crescita guidato dall’acqua, in cui la traspirazione viene convertita in biomassa attraverso il parametro della produttività dell’acqua (WP); CropSyst si basa su moduli guidati sia dall’acqua che dalla radiazione, mentre WOFOST simula la crescita delle colture utilizzando un approccio guidato dal carbonio e dalla frazione di radiazione intercettata.
