La mode est un système à travers lequel se construisent les représentations individuelles et collectives du corps et de l’identité. Les vêtements, les accessoires et les ornements portés sur la peau façonnent le corps, le forgent dans son existence au monde. Le corps habillé est un ensemble de signes qui englobe les vêtements, la coiffure, le maquillage, les tatouages et les ornements : en d’autres termes, tout ce qui fait du corps un élément culturel et non simplement un élément naturel. Le temps et le langage sont les principales formes de la mode : à travers la mode, nous voyons le temps passer, et la mode parle à travers ses multiples signes. À titre d’exemple, pensons à la manière dont le lien étroit entre les cultures musicales, les styles sous-culturels et les modes des années soixante a changé la perception de la mode elle-même dans la vie quotidienne : les minijupes, les jeans et les vêtements décontractés sont devenus, à la fois, le symbole d’une époque, ainsi que des traits intemporels de la culture et de l’imaginaire. La mode a une double nature : d’une part, elle marque les zones de contact entre les vêtements et le corps en stimulant les sens ; d’autre part, elle inscrit le corps de l’individu dans le corps social.
