Es habitual que el término Chiloé mágico se repita en las promociones turísticas, en libros dedicados a su historia y a su geografía, en compendios relativos a su mitología. Este libro reúne uno de los aspectos más fascinantes de este pueblo: sus mitos y leyendas, los relatos fantásticos; ese universo de fábulas y prodigiosas ficciones, de seres sobrenaturales, todo aquello que fue resumido de esta manera por el escritor Francisco Coloane: A veces, por cuarenta noches y cuarenta días arrecian los diluvios. No se sabe quién llora más ni quién llora menos. Se realiza la unidad de las cosas del cielo y de la tierra, y de los peces, pájaros, bestias del agua, en el barro los cuchivilús, traucos en la floresta, camahuetos en los barrancos, viudas volanderas, millalobos, hombres, brujos, demonios de muchas orejas y colas. Así nacimos los chilotes y así morimos, encerrados en nuestra escafandra cósmica, regulada por las luces y las sombras de los cielos a los abismos. 10
