Ocupando, Perú, lugares privilegiados, tanto en América Latina, así como a nivel mundial, en la producción de oro, plata y otros metales, tiene, no obstante, alarmantes niveles de pobreza extrema, pobreza total y críticos indicadores de anemia, desnutrición crónica infantil que desdicen, severamente, esta posición privilegiada en la tenencia de recursos naturales. Desde el siglo XVI hasta el XIX, aproximadamente, América Latina produjo el 80 por ciento de plata a nivel mundial, fortaleciendo los sistemas monetarios de Europa, China e India.
