Quanto mais a militarização transforma um indivíduo ou uma sociedade, mais esse indivíduo ou sociedade passa a imaginar que as necessidades militares e as presunções militaristas são não só valiosas mas também normais. O militarismo esbate as fronteiras entre o que pode ser definido como militar e o que pode ser visto como parte da vida civil. O militarismo exige que toda uma sociedade seja permeada e construída de acordo com os valores e prioridades militares ... o conceito de militarização chama a atenção para a natureza simultaneamente material e discursiva do domínio militar. Ter um exército efetivo e permanente com a capacidade de oferecer recursos humanos ao serviço público é um grande marco, mas também um motivo de preocupação. A última é baseada na forma como estas instituições militares são desviadas pela classe política dominante para consolidar o seu domínio, muitas vezes autoritário. Estes modos de atuação reestruturam frequentemente as relações de poder constitucionalmente garantidas no país, derrubando e subordinando a autoridade civil à militar, numa tentativa deliberada de recuperação do poder civil.
