Milicia indiana, publicado en 1599, es un tratado de arte militar. Fue pensado para los capitanes o caudillos españoles en América, enfrentados a los inconvenientes geográficos, y a los aborígenes. Su autor, Bernardo de Vargas Machuca (1557-1622) soldado y capitán español, participó a fines del siglo XVI en diversas campañas en América. Fruto de su experiencia fue el libro Milicia indiana (Madrid, 1599). Milicia indiana es una guía general para conquistadores con tácticas militares y estrategias políticas para vencer y reducir a grupos indígenas aislados y rebeldes. Incluye además recomendaciones para develar las estrategias militares de los indígenas, así como normas de comportamiento para conquistadores. A través de este tratado también llegamos a conocer las enfermedades y lesiones más frecuentes entre los soldados y los tratamientos y medicinas más convenientes para remediarlas.
