Władze większości krajów rozwijających się coraz bardziej niepokoją się wpływem migracji na rozwój społeczno-gospodarczy swoich obywateli. W Ghanie obawy te zostały jasno wyrażone przez organizacje społeczeństwa obywatelskiego, zgromadzenia okręgowe, lokalne i międzynarodowe organizacje pozarządowe, a także agencje rządowe. Szczególny nacisk położono na sposób radzenia sobie z problemem migracji wewnętrznej, która hamuje rozwój obszarów wiejskich poprzez utratę młodych, sprawnych fizycznie mężczyzn i kobiet, którzy mogliby pomagać w uprawie ziemi w celu produkcji żywności i roślin przeznaczonych na sprzedaż, zapewniających utrzymanie gospodarstw domowych, a także całej społeczności. Rząd Ghany, lokalne i międzynarodowe organizacje pozarządowe, a także niektóre organizacje społeczeństwa obywatelskiego podjęły wysiłki, aby zaradzić poważnym zagrożeniom, jakie migracja stanowi dla środowiska i sytuacji zatrudnienia w ośrodkach miejskich. Jednak większość społeczności wiejskich w Ghanie jest nadal w pewnym stopniu słabo rozwinięta w wyniku migracji. W związku z powyższym przeprowadzono niniejsze badanie w celu zidentyfikowania czynników wpływających na migrację i jej wpływ na stan zasobów gospodarstw wiejskich w okręgu.
