Die indische Regierung hat im Laufe der Jahre mehrere Programme zur Schaffung von Arbeitsplätzen im ländlichen Raum durchgeführt und umgesetzt. National Rural Employment Programme (NREP) im Jahr 1980, Rural Landless Employment Guarantee Programme (RLEGP) im Jahr 1983, Jawahar Rozgar Yojana (JRY) im letzten Jahr des Siebten Fünfjahresplans, Employment Assurance Scheme (EAS) im Jahr 1993, Jawahar Gram Samridhi Yojana (JGSY) im Jahr 1999, Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY) im Jahr 2001, National Food for Work Programme (NFFWP) 2004, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) im Jahr 2005, der als National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) bekannt ist, usw. Mit MGNREGA wurde das Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) eingeführt, das eine geplante Modifikation aller vorangegangenen Lohnbeschäftigungsprogramme (Wage Employment Programmes, WEP) darstellt, die seit 1980 im Land durchgeführt wurden. Vor diesem Hintergrund haben die Autoren versucht, MGNREGA und MGNREGS als Beschäftigungsquelle für die Landbevölkerung, ihre Auswirkungen auf das Leben und die Schaffung von Vermögenswerten in ländlichen Gebieten zu untersuchen.
