Após a revolução industrial, os metais pesados tornaram-se o tema mais popular devido às suas consequências nefastas. Existem muitos métodos para remover metais pesados das águas residuais utilizadas na indústria. O chumbo é um dos metais pesados mais nocivos contidos nas águas residuais e muitas indústrias trabalham com chumbo. Tendo em conta estes factores, optámos por remover o chumbo das águas residuais sintéticas utilizando folhas de jaqueira (Artocarpus heterophyllus). O estudo foi realizado para encontrar as condições óptimas para a remoção do chumbo das águas residuais utilizando folhas de jaqueira. Foram utilizados bio-sorventes modificados e não modificados para determinar qual a condição que permite uma maior capacidade de remoção do metal. Outros parâmetros considerados foram o pH da água residual, a concentração inicial da água residual, o tempo de contacto e a dosagem do adsorvente. A modificação foi efectuada utilizando ácido acético para aumentar a porosidade e melhorar a qualidade da água tratada.
