This work compiles the results of research and extension projects conducted at the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina (IFSC)-Chapecó campus-on metallography applied to steels and cast irons, bringing together microstructural analyses obtained by optical microscopy following various heat treatments. Among the metal alloys analyzed are carbon steels, low-alloy steels, stainless steels, manganese steels, and tool steels, as well as white, gray, and nodular cast irons. The book examines how different heat treatments-such as normalizing, annealing, quenching, tempering, and solution treatment-directly influence phase transformations, while also establishing their relationship with the resulting mechanical properties, with an emphasis on experimentally determined hardness values. The book integrates theory and practice, serving as a reference for students and professionals in the field of Materials Science and Engineering.
