La Dialettica dell’Illuminismo di Adorno e Horkheimer (1997 [1944]) si trova oggi in una posizione precaria alla periferia della filosofia sociale 'accettabile', spesso liquidata come trascendente nella critica e totalizzante nella presentazione [Honneth, 2000]. In questo articolo sostengo che tale prospettiva sia davvero insufficiente. Sostengo che Dialettica dell’Illuminismo sia un’opera di immenso valore per il teorico sociale di oggi e che le critiche dominanti nella sua ricezione contemporanea non riescano a tenere conto della distinta specie di critica che Dialettica dell’Illuminismo esprime. La mia tesi è che quando Dialettica dell’Illuminismo viene vista attraverso il paradigma della diagnosi della patologia sociale, l’opera si presenta come uno sforzo potente e tempestivo di filosofia sociale. Quando si legge Dialettica dell’Illuminismo, diventa chiaro che l’opera è una critica sofisticata e gratificante, non di una società localizzata, ma di 'una forma di vita'. Questo lavoro si basa quindi sulla produzione di una critica diagnostica della patologia, mostra i passaggi coinvolti nella creazione di tale lettura e presenta come tale schema interpretativo aiuti a contestare le tendenze dominanti che mettono in discussione la legittimità della Dialettica dell’Illuminismo.
