A Dialética do Esclarecimento de Adorno e Horkheimer (1997 [1944]) situa-se hoje precariamente na periferia da filosofia social 'aceitável'; frequentemente rejeitada como transcendente na crítica e totalizante na apresentação [Honneth, 2000]. Neste texto, defendo que essa perspetiva é verdadeiramente insuficiente. Defendo que a Dialética do Iluminismo é uma obra de imenso valor para o teórico social de hoje; e que as críticas dominantes na sua receção contemporânea não conseguem acomodar as espécies distintas de crítica que a Dialética do Iluminismo evidencia. O meu argumento é que, quando a Dialética do Iluminismo é vista através do paradigma do diagnóstico da patologia social, a obra apresenta-se como um esforço potente e oportuno de filosofia social. Assim, quando se lê a Dialética do Iluminismo, torna-se claro que a obra é uma crítica sofisticada e gratificante, não de uma sociedade localizada, mas de 'uma forma de vida'. Este trabalho constrói, assim, uma crítica que diagnostica a patologia, demonstra os passos envolvidos na criação de uma tal leitura e apresenta como um tal esquema interpretativo ajuda a contestar as tendências dominantes que desafiam a legitimidade da Dialética do Iluminismo.
