A ideia de inferno é unânime entre as culturas antigas, e no Cristianismo ela foi amadurecida para um conceito teológico, lugar de castigo para os homens que recusaram Deus, o sumo bem, a suma beleza, a suma verdade, isto é, os do mundo medíocre. Brás Cubas é um homem que o tempo todo recusa Deus pelas escolhas, e ele recusa justamente quando não passa na cabeça dele a ideia mesma de Deus, não obstante ter as ideias e os conceitos morais dentro de si, ou seja, é um hipócrita, cuja verdade está na língua, não no peito. Brás Cubas é a encarnação da mediocridade da fé brasileira, uma fé movida por achismos e moralismos exteriores, mas que não se aprofundam na casca. O homem medíocre é como um boi ruminante pastando um vasto pasto de capim inebriante, com toda sorte de torpor aos sentidos, vai se esvaindo e sumindo-se nos prazeres externos, e nos medos externos, e se apaga, até quando é chamado para o abate, e ainda rumina, mas não percebe que seu fim está próximo. Este é o mundo que Brás Cubas expõe sem esgotar, já que a mediocridade e o pessimismo dela é um mar que não se enxerga o fim.
