The book is a detailed account of Semmes’ experiences during the American Civil War, specifically his service in the Confederate Navy. It covers his time as the captain of the CSS Sumter and later the CSS Alabama, two of the most successful Confederate commerce raiders. The book also includes Semmes’ thoughts on the war and the politics surrounding it, as well as his views on naval warfare and strategy. This second volume of the memoirs was originally published in 1869 and provides readers with a unique perspective on the Civil War from the viewpoint of a Confederate naval officer. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
