O objetivo principal do trabalho é conhecer os meios de subsistência das zonas rurais e urbanas de Assam e examinar a sua sustentabilidade. São analisadas as diferenças na vulnerabilidade das zonas rurais e urbanas de Assam e a diferença entre Assam e todos os outros estados da Índia. Com a análise dos resultados dos meios de subsistência, procura-se examinar a diferença de sustentabilidade entre as áreas, as ligações entre os fatores e o impacto da liberalização. A abordagem dos meios de subsistência sustentáveis tenta incluir todas as questões e, assim, dá uma ideia completa sobre os meios de subsistência. Num estado como Assam, onde a pobreza é um dos principais desafios, o estudo detalhado sobre meios de subsistência pode ajudar a dar uma nova visão que pode ajudar na formulação de medidas políticas eficazes. A hipótese na qual o trabalho se baseia é que os meios de subsistência nas zonas rurais são tão sustentáveis quanto nas zonas urbanas de Assam. Tendo em mente o objetivo da pesquisa, o contexto de vulnerabilidade é inicialmente examinado por tendências e choques. É feito um estudo comparativo entre as zonas rurais e urbanas de Assam e com a média nacional.
