Kann das Gehirn durch frühen Zweitspracherwerb überlastet werden? Gib es Altersschwellen für den Zweitspracherwerb? Und welches ist die optimale Spracherwerbsmethode? Diese und ähnliche Fragen tauchen auf, wenn das Thema „Mehrsprachigkeit' diskutiert wird. Einerseits wird von einer Seite her postuliert, dass das Gehirn eines Kindes durch zu viele Sprachen überlastet wird, während die andere Seite ins Feld rührt, dass nur das Gehirn von Kleinkindern noch plastisch genug ist, um Sprachen leicht zu lernen. Die Ausarbeitung dieser Fragen mit Bezugnahme zum Konzept „Fremdsprache in der Grundschule' soll Gegenstand dieser Arbeit sein.
