Der Band stellt Forschungsergebnisse zu den Themen Krankheit und Gesundheit, Krankheitserlebens- und -bearbeitungsprozesse vor und verdeutlicht die Spannbreite dieser Auseinandersetzung über sehr unterschiedliche Fachdisziplinen hinweg. Die Erforschung dieser Phänomene in der Soziologie hat eine lange Tradition im Rahmen medizinsoziologischer Fragestellungen. Aufgrund der Dominanz der biomedizinischen Sichtweise führen diese Erkenntnisweisen jedoch ein (unbegründetes) Schattendasein. Der Begriff der Medizinischen Pädagogik ist innerhalb der Pflege durch den Begriff der Pflegepädagogik ersetzt worden, in der Medizin wird er unter Medical Education gehandelt und in der Pädagogik erst neu entdeckt.
