Em relação ao corpo, a meditação ensina a lidar com a dor de forma não rejeitante. Alguns métodos podem alterar a avaliação subjetiva das experiências sensoriais e levar a uma melhor gestão da dor. A meditação reduz a pressão arterial e fortalece o sistema imunológico. Não só com o avanço da idade, mas em todas as fases da vida, a meditação é uma ferramenta contra o esgotamento, a depressão (incluindo recaídas), a ansiedade e os distúrbios do sono, etc. No que diz respeito à área social, verifica-se que a meditação promove uma abertura para as relações, uma vez que nos torna mais equilibrados, aumentando a tolerância para com nós próprios e para com os outros. Resultados empíricos mostram um aumento da densidade da massa cinzenta e uma maior ativação em regiões do cérebro relacionadas com a empatia, a compaixão, o sentimento de pertença, a regulação das emoções, o autodesenvolvimento e o amor. Os especialistas desaconselham o início da prática da meditação em casos de depressão grave e casos psiquiátricos limítrofes, pois sem o acompanhamento de um psiquiatra experiente em meditação, ela não é útil e pode até intensificar os sintomas psicóticos.
