Un repaso por las investigaciones llevadas a cabo en el ámbito de las adicciones a sustancias describen simplemente patrones actuales y formas de consumo o bien identifican factores precipitantes y consecuentes del abuso de drogas y alcohol en jóvenes. En general, estas aportaciones se muestran fragmentadas a nivel teórico y con escasa incidencia práctica en los programas preventivos.Además, hoy en día, existe un fuerte componente cultural en el consumo de las drogas legales, especialmente en el alcohol. Este componente cultural es transmitido por los distintos medios de comunicación social: prensa, radio, cine y especialmente por la televisión dada su accesibilidad. Basta ojear cualquier periódico o revista para ver la cantidad de imágenes publicitarias relacionadas con el alcohol y/o tabaco. O encender la televisión para ver anuncios en los que se nos presentan distintas reuniones sociales (fiestas de jóvenes, almuerzos entre amigos, etc.) acompañadas por un vino de mesa o una copa de licor. Los medios de comunicación social son grandes reforzadores de esta cultura.
