Fundado durante a jihad da Guerra Fulani em 1809 por Usman dan Fodio, foi abolido quando os britânicos derrotaram o califa em 1903 e colocaram a região sob o Protetorado do Norte da Nigéria. Os reinos Hausa independentes, no seu apogeu, o califado ligava mais de 30 emirados diferentes e mais de 10 milhões de pessoas no estado mais poderoso da sua região e um dos impérios mais importantes de África no século XIX. O califado era uma confederação informal de emirados que reconheciam a suserania do 'comandante dos fiéis', o sultão ou califa. O califado trouxe décadas de crescimento económico a toda a região. Estima-se que entre um e 2,5 milhões de escravos não muçulmanos tenham sido capturados durante a jihad. Estes escravos forneceram mão de obra para as plantações e tiveram a oportunidade de se tornarem muçulmanos. Embora os britânicos tenham abolido a autoridade política do califa, o título de sultão foi mantido e continua a ser um importante líder religioso na Nigéria atual.
