Le califat de Sokoto était un califat islamique indépendant en Afrique de l’Ouest. Fondé pendant le jihad de la guerre des Peuls en 1809 par Usman dan Fodio, il a été aboli lorsque les Britanniques ont vaincu le calife en 1903 et ont placé la région sous le protectorat du Nigeria du Nord. À son apogée, le califat reliait plus de 30 émirats différents et plus de 10 millions de personnes dans l’État le plus puissant de la région et l’un des empires les plus importants d’Afrique au XIXe siècle. Le califat était une confédération souple d’émirats qui reconnaissaient la suzeraineté du 'commandeur des croyants', le sultan ou calife. Le califat a apporté des décennies de croissance économique dans toute la région. On estime qu’entre un et 2,5 millions d’esclaves non musulmans ont été capturés pendant le jihad. Ils ont fourni de la main-d’œuvre aux plantations et ont eu la possibilité de devenir musulmans. Bien que les Britanniques aient aboli l’autorité politique du calife, le titre de sultan a été conservé et reste un chef religieux important au Nigeria aujourd’hui.
