Die maxillofaziale Prothetik ist ein Teilgebiet der Prothetik, das sich der Rehabilitation von Patienten mit Defekten oder Behinderungen im Kopf- und Halsbereich widmet, die angeboren, erworben oder entwicklungsbedingt sind. Diese Defekte können aus onkologischen Operationen, Traumata, Infektionen oder kraniofazialen Anomalien resultieren und das Kauen, Sprechen, Schlucken, Sehen, Atmen und das psychosoziale Wohlbefinden tiefgreifend beeinträchtigen. Während die mikrovaskuläre Rekonstruktion mittels freier Lappen erhebliche Fortschritte gemacht hat, bleibt die prothetische Rehabilitation unverzichtbar, wenn ein chirurgischer Verschluss nicht möglich ist, funktionelle Defizite bestehen bleiben oder ästhetische Verfeinerungen erforderlich sind. Die moderne maxillofaziale Prothetik integriert digitale Arbeitsabläufe, biokompatible Polymere, osseointegrierte Implantate und die interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit zwischen Chirurgen, Onkologen, Logopäden und Anaplastologen, um so die funktionellen und psychosozialen Ergebnisse zu optimieren.
