The subject of masculinities has quickly gained popular interest and has recently become a significant area of academic research. This book explores ways in which secondary school boys in an Australian school negotiate and interrogate discursive ideologies relating to hegemonic masculinities and to the normality of whiteness. It examines ways in which students are able to open up spaces to interrogate hegemonic heterosexual masculinities, to interrogate power relationships, and to access alternative masculinities. The voices of the students bring to life their everyday life experiences and feelings. This book identifies some of the main theoretical arguments within the field of masculinities, particularly as informed by a feminist perspective. The new knowledge presented here has the potential to significantly influence teaching strategies and transform educational practices which can affect social justice issues. This book is essential reading for both practitioners and researchers at school and university level, and for others interested in the ways in which the notions of masculinities affect society today.
