Die Vorarbeiten für diese Studie gehen weit zurück. In Vorlesungen und übungen habe ich ihr Problem mehrfach behandelt. Auf dem von der Unga­ rischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Budapest im Mai 1965 veranstal­ teten Colloquium 'Les problemes du Gothique et de la Renaissance et l’ Art de l’Europe centrale' und auf dem Internationalen Seminar des Kunst­ historischen Instituts Florenz 'Probleme der Quattrocentomalerei in Flo­ renz' im September 1965 habe ich über das Thema gesprochen. Zum Ab­ schluß kam die Studie während meiner Zugehörigkeit zum Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, vom September 1965 bis Januar 1966. Ich danke dem Institute for Advanced Study und vor allem den Kollegen Erwin Panofsky, Millard Meiss und Kurt Weitzmann für alle Hilfsbereitschaft und Gastfreundschaft. Dankbar gedenke ich auch der Hilfe Rosalie B. Greens und ihrer Mitarbeiterinnen am Index of Christian Art in Princeton.
