O manguezal teve uma importância histórica na costa equatoriana, e hoje em dia a população que se estabeleceu no perfil costeiro continua a mantê-lo, e há usuários dos bens e serviços produzidos por este importante ecossistema marinho-costeiro. A biodiversidade dos manguezais consiste particularmente na presença de um grande número de plantas epífitas (bromélias, orquídeas, samambaias e musgos) associadas aos manguezais, muitos invertebrados marinhos, peixes e uma considerável variedade de aves aquáticas e terrestres, tanto residentes como migratórias. As áreas costeiras, pela sua própria natureza, têm sido desde tempos históricos uma parte importante do desenvolvimento dos povos, e nos últimos anos tem sido dada maior importância não só à localização geopolítica da região, mas também ao valor económico, social e ecológico dos seus recursos costeiros. O manguezal é um excelente retentor e acumulador de sedimentos, minerais e metais pesados em suspensão nas colunas de água dos estuários, além disso o mangue é um produtor de madeira para diversos usos como habitação, pontes, barcos, docas, artes de pesca, armadilhas e combustível em forma de lenha e carvão vegetal, é o habitat de peixes, moluscos, crustáceos, uma fonte de trabalho para muitas famílias que dependem do recurso do mangue, e permite activar a economia das pessoas que se dedicam à pesca e à extracção e captura de caranguejos e conchas.
