Quinientos años después de su breve vida, recordamos a Malintzin como la figura femenina más influyente de nuestra historia. En la imaginación popular, entre los pueblos indígenas y de muchas comunidades campesinas y urbanas, Malinche es una reina legendaria, casi una diosa, que recibió a los españoles y facilitó la conquista, en especial la llegada de la religión católica, con la que se identifica. De lo que no cabe duda es de que la identidad de Malinche, ese ensamblaje poderoso y sorprendente entre el conquistador y la conquistadora, el capitán y la traductora, el español y la indígena, ha estado siempre en disputa. Las mujeres, en todo caso, fueron participantes, intermediarias, conductoras de los intercambios que permitieron humanizar a los recién llegados desde el punto de vista mesoamericano, y así incorporarlos a las redes y alianzas de los pueblos indígenas. Sin ellas, medio millar de españoles hambrientos y extraviados hubieran sido incapaces de asentarse en estas tierras e imponer su poder sobre los naturales, o creer que lo habían hecho.
