Plus de 3 500 espèces de moustiques appartenant à 34 genres ont été recensées et classées en trois sous-familles, à savoir Anophelinae, Culicinae et Toxorhynchitinae. Les principaux moustiques vecteurs de maladies et de nuisances appartiennent aux genres Anopheles, Culex, Aedes, Mansonia, Haemogogus, Sabethes et Psorophora. En Inde, les différentes espèces d’Anopheles, de Culex, d’Aedes et de Mansonia sont d’importants vecteurs de maladies.
