Au fil des années, l’expression clinique de la maladie cœliaque a beaucoup changé. La diarrhée est moins prédominante : sa fréquence est passée de 90 % des symptômes au diagnostic durant la période 1979-1983 à moins de 70 % pendant la période 2004-2008. En contrepartie, la fréquence du retard statural est passée de 23 % en 1999-2003 à 35 % en 2004-2008.La maladie cœliaque est progressivement passée du statut de maladie digestive rare du nourrisson à celui de maladie systémique fréquente touchant tous les âges de la vie.Son incidence symptomatique validée dans la seule wilaya d’Oran est de 2,5 ± 1,3 pour 1 000 naissances vivantes. Cette incidence est probablement sous-estimée en raison de l’absence d’études séro-épidémiologiques prospectives basées sur un dépistage actif utilisant les marqueurs sérologiques dans la population générale.Cette ampleur croissante justifie de connaître avec précision, dans notre contexte, le profil clinique, biologique et histologique des jeunes patients cœliaques ainsi que leur devenir à long terme.
