Questo libro mira a dimostrare l’impatto del lato negativo dell’utilitarismo sui principi morali della società, come riflesso in 'Hard Times' di Dickens e in 'Ziqaq Al-Midaq' di Mahfouz. Il libro si concentra inoltre sull’individuazione delle somiglianze e delle differenze tra il punto di vista di Dickens sull’utilitarismo e quello di Mahfouz, in particolare su come questo concetto si rifletta nelle società occidentali e orientali. Essi mostrano la lotta delle persone per contrastare le conseguenze lasciate dall’utilitarismo, insieme ai suoi effetti negativi sulla struttura sociale e sul morale nel suo complesso.
