Cet ouvrage vise à démontrer l’impact des aspects négatifs de l’utilitarisme sur les principes moraux de la société, tels qu’ils sont reflétés dans *Hard Times* de Dickens et *Ziqaq Al-Midaq* de Mahfouz. Il s’attache également à mettre en évidence les similitudes et les différences entre le point de vue de Dickens et celui de Mahfouz sur l’utilitarisme, en particulier la manière dont ce concept se reflète dans les sociétés occidentales et orientales. Ces œuvres montrent la lutte des gens pour contrer les conséquences laissées par l’utilitarisme, ainsi que ses effets néfastes sur la structure sociale et la morale dans leur ensemble. Les XVIIIe et XIXe siècles ont été porteurs d’un vent de changement à travers le monde, grâce aux découvertes géographiques occidentales. L’Occident a commencé à appliquer ses théories à l’Orient, comme en témoignent les écrits de Naguib Mahfouz et d’autres romanciers orientaux. De plus, Mahfouz a fondé sa philosophie sur les idées de penseurs occidentaux tels que Charles Darwin, Mill, Freud et Bentham. Les conditions de vie de Mahfouz l’ont amené à réfléchir à des réformes sociales dans son roman Ziqaq Al-Midaq, afin de plaider pour l’ascension sociale de la classe inférieure vers les classes voisines, en s’appuyant sur l’élimination de l’oppression exercée par la classe supérieure.
