Né à Paris en 1749, Louis Tousard est un personnage aujourd’hui oublié et méconnu. En 1777, il rejoint comme volontaire la bannière étoilée et participe à l’indépendance des États-Unis, puis devient successivement planteur à Saint-Domingue, inspecteur d’artillerie dans l’armée américaine et consul en Louisiane. Acteur engagé dans les révolutions américaine, haïtienne, française de la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle, il se situe au carrefour d’un espace atlantique marqué par la circulation de nouveaux modèles politiques et sociaux. Cette biographie retrace le parcours d’un officier illustrant les débuts chaotiques des relations franco-américaines et les dissymétries militaires d’un espace affecté par la remise en question d’un ordre politico-colonial désormais révolu.
