Los cuatro hombres justos (The Four Just Man) fue publicada por el propio Wallace en su modesta editorial Tallis Press, en 1905. La primera edición no incluyó el último capítulo con la explicación de cómo pudo cometerse el crimen en una habitación cerrada sin dejar huella alguna, sino que ofreció públicamente un premio de quinientas libras a quien ofreciera la solución correcta. Cuatro hombres que se dicen “justos”, creen en una justicia de orden natural, marcada en la conciencia del hombre, pero que no se cumple por la corrupción de las autoridades y las deficiencias de las leyes. Están convencidos de ser instrumentos de la Providencia y como tal se apropian del divino derecho de quitar la vida a los que consideran criminales. Acechados por toda la policía londinense, amenazan la vida del ministro del Exterior inglés por llevar a la cámara la aprobación de una ley que consideran injusta. “Por lo que respecta a la improbabilidad de mis historias criminales, la verdadera dificultad al escribir estriba en encontrar algo auténticamente improbable”, afirma Wallace. “Todos los días hay casos en los tribunales que, de ser escritos en forma de ficción, serían tachados de imposibles”.
