Récit, par le chef de la mission Flamand - Pein, des combats qui eurent lieu au Sahara fin décembre 1899 et début janvier 1900. Ils eurent pour conséquence la prise d’In-Salah par le goum du capitaine Pein et des affrontements sanglants, un peu plus tard, devant l’oasis d’In-Rhar, contre les partisans du pacha de Timmi. On s’est demandé si la prise d’In-Salah, prélude à la conquête des oasis du Touat et du Sahara, avait été fortuite ou si elle avait été préméditée. La présence d’un drapeau français dans les cantines du géologue Flamand pourrait répondre à la question.En complément de ce texte, présentation de clichés photographiques réalisés au cours du combat d’In-Rhar le 19 mars 1900 moins de trois mois après la prise d’In-Salah. Le lieutenant Martial, auteur de ces photographies, participa à cet événement qui fit des centaines de morts. C’est un reportage exceptionnel pour l’époque et il mérite de figurer au sommaire de l’histoire du Sahara.
