En 1900 le Sahara restait encore un continent mythique pour les Européens. Les oasis interdites et la crainte inspirée par les rezzous des farouches guerriers touaregs enflammaient l’imagination des nouveaux arrivants. Quelques années vont suffire pour que le mythe devienne réalité. La prise d’In Salah et le combat de Tit où s’affrontèrent Touaregs et troupes coloniales françaises ont marqué la fin d’une époque. Les pionniers du Sahara ont écrit les pages d’une véritable épopée : de l’odyssée du marquis de Morès, disparu tragiquement dans les sables de la Tripolitaine, à l’œuvre du Père de Foucauld au Hoggar, du chef touareg Moussa ag Amastan au général Laperrine, tous ces hommes ont participé, à leur façon, à la transformation du désert. Nostalgie d’une période révolue, désir de faire revivre par le texte et l’image un monde qui finissait, ce livre nous conduit aux sources de l’histoire saharienne contemporaine. Photographie, documents et cartes postales accompagnent le témoignage de sahariens intrépides lancés à l’aventure sur les pistes du Sud.
