Nonostante il fatto che al giorno d’oggi la società occidentale sia immersa in molte esposizioni di vari 'io', il lavoro di Nan Goldin è stato pionieristico in questo campo sotto molti aspetti, e la sua comparsa è stata possibile solo grazie ad alcuni cambiamenti sociali avvenuti negli ultimi secoli. Questo lavoro intende presentare un’analisi iniziale dell’opera di questa fotografa, collocandola nel suo tempo e prendendo come base le trasformazioni sociali che l’hanno preceduta, descritte da Richard Sennett, Anthony Giddens, Walter Benjamin e Michel Foucault. Un esame degli aspetti estetici di quattro immagini di Nan Goldin presentate nell’opera The Ballad of Sexual Dependency dà coerenza a questa analisi.
