Il libro illustra come gli scrittori iracheni abbiano usato i testi di Shakespeare come potenti specchi, riflettendo i loro turbolenti paesaggi sociali e politici, sia prima che dopo l’invasione del 2003. Concentrandosi su Amleto di Foget (1991) e Sedra (1999) dell’era pre-invasione, e su Romeo e Giulietta a Baghdad (2012) e Le donne dell’ISIS di Shakespeare (2020) creati dopo, il libro analizza meticolosamente il potere trasformativo dell’adattamento. Applicando la teoria di Linda Hutcheon, in particolare la domanda cruciale 'Perché?', indaga le forze sociali, etiche, culturali e politiche che spingono gli scrittori iracheni a reimmaginare il Bardo. Il libro rivela un’evoluzione sorprendente: gli adattamenti prima del 2003 spesso ammantavano la critica nell’oscurità, mentre quelli creati all’indomani dell’invasione sono sorprendentemente diretti.
