Nonostante l’aumento dei finanziamenti concessi dai donatori al governo e alle ONG per i programmi di riduzione della povertà nei paesi in via di sviluppo, lo stato di povertà, soprattutto nelle regioni ASAL, è in aumento. L’80% del territorio del Kenya è classificato come arido e semi-arido e ospita quasi un terzo della popolazione del Kenya e il 70% del bestiame del paese. Questo studio critica i progetti finanziati dai donatori attraverso le ONG, il loro contributo allo sviluppo sociale ed economico dei cittadini comuni nelle zone emarginate e, alla fine, suggerisce modi pratici su come le ONG possono attuare i progetti finanziati dai donatori. Lo studio, basato su un progetto JICA di successo denominato Community Agricultural Development project in Semi-Arid Lands (CADSAL) attuato nella contea di Elgeyo Marakwet in Kenya, solleva questioni critiche relative ai progetti finanziati dai donatori e allo sviluppo che probabilmente faciliteranno una nuova prospettiva di sviluppo nei confronti dei progetti finanziati dai donatori in Africa e in Kenya in particolare. Lo studio rimane un utile strumento di autoanalisi per la riflessione tra le organizzazioni non governative e viene utilizzato anche come riferimento dal mondo accademico e dalle società donatrici.
