Negli ultimi anni, l’uso dei social media è cresciuto in modo esponenziale, suscitando preoccupazioni per i suoi potenziali effetti sulla salute mentale. Questo articolo si propone di fornire una revisione completa della letteratura attuale sulla relazione tra l’uso dei social media e i risultati della salute mentale, concentrandosi sugli aspetti positivi e negativi di questa relazione. Attraverso un sondaggio, 400 intervistati di Abuja, Nigeria, sono stati utilizzati per esaminare l’impatto dei social media su depressione, ansia e autostima. I risultati indicano un’associazione significativa tra l’uso eccessivo dei social media e l’aumento dei sintomi di depressione e ansia, in particolare tra gli adolescenti e i giovani adulti. Lo studio ha anche rilevato che il consumo passivo dei social media, come lo scorrere i feed senza impegnarsi attivamente, è legato a livelli di autostima più bassi. Lo studio raccomanda, tra l’altro, che i ricercatori e gli operatori dei media si impegnino a promuovere esperienze online positive e a mitigare gli effetti negativi dei social media sul benessere mentale.
