Il fieno greco (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) è chiamato Trigonella, che in latino significa 'piccolo triangolo', per via dei suoi fiori triangolari bianco-giallastri. È una delle piante medicinali più antiche della storia, con un profilo medicinale e nutrizionale eccezionale. La sua descrizione e i suoi benefici sono stati citati nel Papiro di Ebers (uno dei più antichi documenti medicinali egiziani conservati) già nel 1500 a.C.. Ha una moderata tolleranza alla salinità, alla siccità e ai metalli pesanti e può adattarsi a diverse regioni climatiche e a terreni marginali. I semi di fieno greco contengono una quantità sostanziale di acido oleico, acido nicotinico, acido linolenico, acido linoleico, fibre, glicolipidi, fosfolipidi, colina e vitamina A, B1, B2, C e niacina. Studi empirici suggeriscono che il fieno greco ha molte potenziali applicazioni terapeutiche, come agenti antidiabetici, antiossidanti, antibatterici, antianoressia e anticancerogeni.
